Unit 6 Assignment 3

Gratuitous-When something is there to entertain you.

Informative-To educate us about issues.

Desensitisation-when something doesn't effect you anymore because you're used to it.

When i was watching this scene i found it quite disturbing to see a shard of steel going through Tommy's body. I had the preferred reading for this scene because it is supposed to make me feel uncomfortable and disgusted, which it did.

Effects Model

The effects model is a theory, a theory is somebodies idea, therefore a theory can be wrong. We have to option to agree or disagree because it isn't fact. The effects model was created by a group of people from Frankfurt, they wanted to test how the media effects our behaviour. It sees the media as a 'syringe', a needle that injects you with ideas, it means if you see something in the media, you are most likely to go away an do it. I don't 100% agree with this theory as some people do have common sense. However some people may give in to the theory i.e. children, people who are mentally unstable. These people are passive. The alternative theory is Uses and Gratifications. It focuses on why these people use these media products. It suggests that you are actively using these products for a purpose.

Moral Panic-Creating a panic about something that is seen to be damaging our society.

Opinionated blog Post

Video games are quickly becoming more and more violent which is becoming a cause for concern to parents, as they fear that their children will be influenced by the violence and it will change them to be bad.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2013/09/18/do-games-like-grand-theft-auto-v-cause-real-world-violence/

This site discusses how people responsible for mass murders and shootings are quickly linked to video games and are labels to be 'addicted' to them i.e. GTA, Dead Space, Mortal Combat, COD Black Ops. It states that video games could be a cause of anger and aggression within these people, though no studies have ever shown a direct link between these games and these horrific events, not to say that its not possible but its unlikely. However the studies have shown mixed results, some showing that the games increase aggression, and others prove otherwise.

Oppositional Readings

'in the media, certain violent video games have proven to be a serious concern with different audiences such as parents, who are urged to do more to protect their children from playing these games, as they supposedly "cause aggression" and "violent behaviour".'

'The level of violence, sexual references and drug references within violent video games results in a wider moral panic, as the media injects ideologies into the audience that violent video games are a serious concern, as they corrupt children and cause aggression.'

In essence I agree with these quotes in that the violent nature of them is teaching young children bad habits that they shouldn't be introduced to at their age, but I don't agree with how they say that it can 'corrupt' the kids or 'cause aggression' because at that age the children probably don't even understand what they're doing. Also if the parents are so concerned about their children being influenced they shouldn't allow them to experience these games in the first place.

Some video games however can have hugely positive impacts on its audience. Brain trainer for the Nintendo DS is a good example as it teaches the gamer how to solve puzzles and equations but in a fun and simple way in the hope to keep them interested in playing and learning. Also games on the wii console can be very beneficial to the gamer through their health and fitness. Games such as wii fit, zumba, just dance and many more are very good for keeping fit and can also teach a range of skills i.e. dancing.

I believe that I have a preferred reading towards video games, violent or not, as I don't feel like I play them enough nor do I get 'hooked' on them enough to have some sort of controlling effect on me or make me feel as if I have to re-create the scenarios in the games I play. I play to enjoy the games but I definitely don't feel like they make me violent.

I believe that nobody can truly be 'passive' enough to try and recreate something they've seen in a game unless its something non-violent. I think that the people who committed these massacres and shootings will have had multiple reasons to why they did it, whether it be problems at home or school i.e. bullied; or if they have some sort of mental health condition making it more difficult for them to control their actions, A violent video game could just be a small trigger that sets of a series of events leading them to believe the crimes they commit are ok. In a way then a video game does have an impact on these peoples decisions but theyre not the main reason behind why these people commit these crimes.

Reviews off IGN Are Useful because the give the review that their gamers have given it (10/10) and a general overall public review, it also gives you the option to give your own review which will add onto their public total. IGN is an established Website thats been around for years and is known for being reliable. Although IGN havent left any words about the game they have a comment section below full of comments and the publics' thoughts and opinions on the game.

The good thing about Gamespot is that again it has a rating (9). And it points out positive features about the game and things and things that the public talk about the most, but it also points out the bad things, theres more good than bad, which is what you'd expect but at least its honest.

The Telegraph is an established paper/website and is probably reliable, how ever it doesnt really give much away, it has a rating but it doesn't have any words about the game and doesn't have any user comments... Just a star rating and a picture from the game.

GAMER PROFILE
The Age bracket is 18+, how ever allot of people play it from a younger age of around 13 and over.  The Pegi Website says "The content of this game is suitable for persons aged 18 years and over only. It contains: Extreme violence - Multiple, motiveless killing - Violence towards defenceless people - Strong language". The Main gender for the game is Male. Females are known to play it, But mainly male The Average ratio is 80:20 which is understandable, Men usually play more violent and action games because thats just what men commonly go for. Its scenes in the game like this that probably make it abit less appealing to women where Trevor (Main character) interrogates and tortures a man using car jump cables.

SOCIO ECONOMIC SCALE

On the scale,  the GTA V gamer would sit between the labourers/working class and the unemployed for the people who play it, as these groups will consist more of younger people. However, the people who buy these young people the game would be situated in the higher rankings of the scale i.e. parents with a high level of skill within their occupation receiving a wealthy income, therefore are able to buy their children these games.

GTA is a mainstream game. its very typical, driving and shooting kind of game, its just the way its presented that makes it get the reaction it does, Mainstreamers like this because they hear on reviews that its 10/10 and quoted as "Awesome" and they like that, therefore they just go with it. Also you could argue that its for Succeeders aswel, Seek control and strong opinions, GTA has allot of opinions aimed at it and a big majority of them are amazing. Thats why succeeders also appeal towards the game. Overall the game is Mainstream, its a widely popular played game owned by most teens. In honest there arent many games like GTA, of course there's driving and shooting games but theres things in GTA that make it Unique, like free roaming and all the different options you have throughout the game. The Game is quite open to everyone, its on Xbox, Playstation and its even available on PC. If Grand Theft Auto V were a theatrically-released movie instead of a video game, enough people would have bought tickets to earn only $227.4 million at the global box office. GTA V was released back in September, which was actually four months later than the original date given by the developers. However, that didn’t affect the sales of the game. Just within 24 hours of the release of the title, Take Two Interactive announced that the game managed to raise over $800 million.

-Camera on the stage recording the band
-Camera tracking within the crowd of people on the dance floor

Song Lyrics
The lyrics in the song are partially autobiographical as Chuck Berry wrote it based on his life as a young boy and his guitar playing skills, and how he became famous and wealthy from it, also Berry grew up on 2520 Goode Avenue which is a hint to the song being based around himself. The song was initially inspired by his piano player, Johnnie Johnson, but was mainly based on Berry.

                                                                  Johnny B. Goode"

Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans,
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood,
Where lived a country boy named of Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well,
But he could play the guitar like ringing a bell.

[Chorus:]
Go Go
Go Johnny Go
Go Go
Johnny B. Goode

He use to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Or sit beneath the trees by the railroad track.
Oh, the engineers used to see him sitting in the shade,
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made.
The People passing by, they would stop and say
Oh my that little country boy could play

[Chorus]

His mother told him someday you will be a man,
And you would be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down
Maybe someday your name will be in lights
Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight.

[Chorus]

Theme
The theme of my video is 50's and 60's which will show in the costume, props etc. The clothing at that time was very vibrant, smart, and sensible. The way people dressed at that time period was very neatly done, and i feel its extremely important to incorporate this into my production as fashion was one of the main focuses at that time. The instruments are also a good way of representing the theme of the 50's. The guitars used would've been hollow bodied i.e. Gibson/Epiphone dots, Gretch. Fenders were also popular at this time, preferably stratocasters or telecasters. These guitars are available to hire which will help a lot in making my production as good as it can be.

Location
The main location for my production would be in a large hall with a stage for the band to perform on and a big space for people to dance on. I have taken the idea from the scene in back to the future when Marty is performing at the prom. For me this represents the song and the time period very well and is a good idea for a music video. I will also have cut scenes which will represent the lines in the song. For example one of the lines in the lyrics reads "He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack, or sit beneath a tree by the railroad track" and i think re creating this line and adding it to the video would be very effective and it turns it into a narrative. I will switch back an forth from the stage footage to the cutscene/flashback footage creating a non-linear structure within my production, which keeps the viewers interested and prevents the video from becoming boring.
