                                    The Shining Task

Reviews
We meet Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a man who plans to live for the winter in solitude and isolation with his wife and son. He will be the caretaker of the snowbound Overlook Hotel. His employer warns that a former caretaker murdered his wife and two daughters, and committed suicide, but Jack reassures him: "You can rest assured, Mr. Ullman, that's not gonna happen with me. And as far as my wife is concerned, I'm sure she'll be absolutely fascinated when I tell her about it. She's a confirmed ghost story and horror film addict."

Danny: Is he reliable? He has an imaginary friend named Tony, who speaks in a lower register of Danny's voice. In a brief conversation before the family is left alone, Hallorann warns Danny to stay clear of Room 237, where the violence took place, and he tells Danny they share the "shining," the psychic gift of reading minds and seeing the past and future. Danny tells Dick that Tony doesn't want him to discuss such things. Who is Tony? "A little boy who lives in my mouth."
Tony seems to be Danny's device for channeling psychic input, including a shocking vision of blood spilling from around the closed doors of the hotel elevators. Danny also sees two little girls dressed in matching outfits; although we know there was a two-year age difference in the murdered children, both girls look curiously old. If Danny is a reliable witness, he is witness to specialized visions of his own that may not correspond to what is actually happening in the hotel.
Evaluation of the actors performances
I think that the performances we see from the actors/actresses in this film vary in believability quite a fair amount. I think Danny does very well in portraying the character of a confused child who is very curious to find out what he sees and hears in his visions. Towards the end of the film, it shows that he is very afraid of what he is hearing from his father, and when i watched it i felt disturbed to watch his facial expressions because the fear he was showing seemed too real.
Wendy on the other hand shows a far less believable character because her expressions and movement, i.e. the way she would run away, seemed to stereotypical of a horror film it just seemed quite 'cheesy' and the fear wasn't as believable as the fear shown by Danny.
Jacks character was very believable to me as someone who was experiencing some kind of mental breakdown. i feel that he played the role very well because in the parts of some scenes when he was looking very sinister and creepy, I found myself looking away from the screen as I thought his expressions and actions were very disturbing. This proves that he was successful in becoming this character and making him believable.

Cinematography and Mis en Scene
high/low angle-when jack is trying to get to Wendy up the stairs, he is made to look inferior as he is in a high angle shot, and Wendy is made to look superior as she is in the low angle shot, when actually it's jack who seems to have the power and controll over Wendy.
Close ups-Close ups are used a lot through out this film to show the fear in the characters faces. This camera shot is used a lot on Danny when he experiences his visions, because it draws our attention to his facial expressions which tell us how he is feeling.
Camera Movement-The magority of camera movement used in this film is tracking. It is used a lot to follow Danny around  the corridors of the hotel to make it seem as if you're there with him. Also, when we are tracking Danny, we are at the same level as he is because Kubrick wants us to feel as young and defenceless as as him to create more fear for the audience. He also liked to zoom in to a characters face when they are showing fear, which makes you ignore the background of the frame and focus on how the character is feeling.

Who is my Target Audience?
My target audience for my documentary is quite large. It is aimed at anyone who has had involvement with bullying, whether they were the victim, the bully, the parent etc. It is very important that parents and general adults watch this documentary as it will provide information and help on how to deal with bullying.

How will I target my audience?
i will target my audience by including things into my documentary that will help them to understand the situation that we're focused on. With such a wide audience this will be difficult to incorporate each aspect of the audience, but i will show animations (for the younger audience), and things like reconstructions for the older viewers.

How will my documentary be better?
My documentary will be better than others and will stand out because I will communicate with the different audiences in ways which they understand I.e. When communicating to the younger ages, I would use visual aesthetics to keep them interested and vocabulary/dialogue that they understand. I feel that my documentary will help people with their problems as well as informing them about what's going on, which means I've made a positive effect on the problem.

Layout
My documentary will be participatory as I want to experience these problems first hand and feel like I've got involved in helping people through their issues and physically show my audience what is actually possible. I'll be going to local schools and even work places to hopefully interview some of the staff asking about their knowledge of bullying, if it happens within their lives or if they know of it happening, and what they aim to do about it. Hopefully by the end of my documentary, my audience will have learnt the enormity of bullying, why it happens and how to deal with it. I will use facts and statistics to show people just how real the situation is, and show them the scale of whats happening. Also, reconstructions will be very effective because they will make people feel huge sympathy for the victims and hopefully push them to help fight against bullying. I'll talk about all aspects of bullying whether it be children in school, cyber-bullying, and even between adults in their workplace. People may think

Unit 6 Assignment 1 Prezi notes (Arrow analysis)

Audience
The audience for this programme would be mostly men, age range from 16-40, and a lot of this audience would be superhero/comic book fans as it is based on a fictional character from a DC comic collection. The people who i would think have the oppositional reading are old people and parents. This is because old people wouldn't appreciate the violence and probably wouldn't understand the concept the narrative. Parents may also have the oppositional reading as they might not want their children to watch the violence within it.

Mode of Address
The mode of address has a very serious and dramatic tone which helps to build tension throughout it and you will begin to feel sympathy for some of the characters.

Genre
The genres of this tv show would be:
-Superhero fiction
-Drama
-Action
-Mystery
The generic conventions of this tv series are very distinctive. We have a hooded vigilante who conseals his real identity using a name I.e. The hood (as he is named by the detective) and he distorts his voice. This is to protect his family and friends from danger. He fights crime to protect the city but he does occasionally kill people which is something a bit different from your usual heros I.e. Batman or spiderman. He also has sidekicks who help him either on the field or tracking people down, and they do this from a secret 'lair' where he keeps all of his weaponry and hardware. Like all superhero series there's a villain or in this case a number of villains who the hero has to stop in order to protect others.

Style- I want to break free

I feel that the style of the music video 'I want to break free' by Queen is a mixture of interpretive and narrative. I think that it's interpretive because it focuses on presenting a unique visual experience that viewers can evaluate what they think it means for themselves. I also think it's a narrative as I believe that Freddy Mercury is trying to portray hidden messages through his lyrics about his sexuality and not being able to fully express himself, which is very clever. Another technique they use here is pastiche when they refer back to their previous video 'Bohemian Rhapsody' when they're stood in that iconic diamond formation with the torches around them whilst they sing. The video is also quite surreal because of the fact that Queen dress up in drag in parts of the video doing house work, and Mercury, along with a group of dancers, are all dressed in leotard type clothing whilst lying on each other and rolling around. The start of the video shows different shots of rooftops and it opens with the band in a living room which is a spoof/parody of the tv show Coronation street. The video was also unconventional at the time as men didn't tend to dress as women. They were also representing the image of women in the 80's and how they were only seen as people who do the house work and weren't any better than that.

Unit 3 Assignment 3 Documentary Analysis-Cant bully me

In the documentary 'Cant bully me', the production team follow the victims to document their feelings and how they live their lives after being bullied. We can compare it to our documentary in the sense that both have interviewed the victims to understand the way they feel and the struggle that they have been through when trying to fit in. Also both documentaries use facts ans statistics to make people aware of the situation and the enormity of it. They also give people an insight into the victims life creating sympathy towards them, which in turns makes people more dedicated to putting an end to bullying.

We could've improved our documentary by having a narrator over the top of the footage to explain the different situations and add a more serious tone to the documentary. Another thing we had in common with the 'Cant bully me' documentary is that we both interviewed different people other than the victim i.e. the teachers, which meant we can hear multiple sides of the stories and see them from the perspective of others. It also shows that bullying can affect a wide range of people and involve multiple people not just the bully and the victim, which gives even more reason to put a stop to bullying.
